Before delivery starts
Join solution shaping when technical feasibility, legacy constraints, estimates or named expertise affect the bid.
Software Factory
Elstran delivers specialist software work for technology companies that win and run major public-sector, regulated and security-sensitive projects.
The role
We are built for the point where a programme needs more than generic capacity: a team able to understand the existing system, meet the security and documentation standard, and deliver a bounded result.
Join solution shaping when technical feasibility, legacy constraints, estimates or named expertise affect the bid.
Operate as a specialist cell aligned to the prime contractor’s architecture, tooling, governance and client commitments.
Carry the work package through implementation, testing, evidence, handover and production support where agreed.
Legacy modernisation
A long-lived system is usually both technical debt and a compressed record of the organisation. We recover the second before reducing the first.
A legacy estate is bigger than anyone can hold. Reading every program, interface, schedule, data store and dependency — and keeping the whole picture in view at once — is not work a human team can finish. That is why legacy modernisation so often starts with a guess about what the system does.
AI changes what is possible at the first step. We map the estate in full and turn it into something a person can review. Once the system is understood as a whole, the rest is ordinary engineering: build on top of it, or rebuild it in controlled steps. AI-assisted analysis helps us map large legacy estates and identify dependencies, assumptions and gaps for engineers to verify.
Map the living system. Inventory programs, interfaces, schedules, data stores, operational dependencies and the people who still understand the edge cases.
Create a safety net. Add characterisation tests, representative data, observability and repeatable environments around behaviour that must not change.
Choose the right boundary. Separate stable domain logic from parts that need replacement. Wrap, re-platform, refactor or rewrite according to evidence.
Migrate in increments. Move traffic and responsibility in measurable steps with reconciliation, rollback and explicit operational acceptance.
Transfer the knowledge. Leave the programme with current documentation, testable contracts and a wider group able to operate the result.
Technical range
We select technology around programme constraints, existing estates and long-term ownership — not a fashionable default.
COBOL and adjacent mainframe or enterprise environments; code analysis, maintenance, testing, interfaces and staged modernisation.
Backend services, web applications, data workflows, APIs, integrations and deployment automation.
Retrieval, document intelligence, agentic workflows and governed model integration where probabilistic software creates measurable value.
Identity, least privilege, environment separation, traceable change, controlled release and audit-ready execution.
Matrix advantage
Elstran Matrix gives our engineers structured memory, governed AI workflows and specialised digital roles for research, analysis, documentation and quality work. It does not remove engineering accountability — it compresses the repetitive work around it and makes a smaller expert team unusually effective.
Discover MatrixFrom scope to handover
Review the system, constraints, security requirements and the work package with your technical team.
Agree interfaces and a delivery rhythm. Review the implementation and evidence as work progresses.
Agree what acceptance requires: code, tests, documentation and operational responsibilities.
Market fit
The work touches legacy systems, regulated data, integration boundaries or AI — and must arrive with evidence, not only code.
We can embed deeply, but we work best when Elstran owns a defined outcome, can preserve team context and is accountable for quality.
